Prelude: "The night is always darkest just prior to the dawn" (Thomas Fuller and many others since and likely before).
Gone
When he’s gone, it won’t be because he did not care
It won’t be because was not capable
It won’t be because he could not love
It won’t be because he did not love life.
No, it won’t be any of those lackings
His life has been so deeply gifted by all of them
And for this abundance and joy he is ineffably grateful.
He will be gone because he was not heard
He will be gone because he was not respected
He will be gone because he was not loved.
Still, this will not come to pass
And here is why…
He will dive deep, deep, deep… depth upon depth…
Into the darkest, most pressured abyss
He will touch the bottom
And see that about this too
There is no reason
No reason at all
To believe that this too is not unimaginably beautiful.
And he will begin his ascent again
Toward the diffuse, rainbowed light from above
Ready to give and connect again
With all of this magnificent extraordinariness
Mysteriously given with a love unconditional.
Postlude: "The first question I ask myself when something doesn't seem to be beautiful is why do I think it's not beautiful. And very shortly you discover that there is no reason" (John Cage).
